Surviving Alone in the Wilderness

You have just finished reading Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. Brian Robeson was unable to prepare himself for the airplane crash that he was involved in.

Now, you will examine the different survival elements including potential wildlife dangers, fires, cooking, clothing, weather, and location of camp in order to prepare yourself for an unexpected disaster like Brian.

After your group has been selected, you will need to find out your role in the survival guide.

Each of your group members will be in charge of researching one of the following topics:

*wildlife and potential dangers-beasts

*fires and cooking-chefs

*clothing and supplies-shoppers

*location of camp and weather-campers

You will need to investigate the following web sites individually in order to learn additional information that will help you determine the essential elements in order to survive.

Remember to take a look at all of the sites, but take notes on the information that is included in your topic only.

After exploring the web sites listed above, you will meet with your other group members to discuss your findings.  First, the beasts and the chefs will meet together while the shoppers and the campers will meet together.  Once these groups have discussed their findings, all group members will meet together to discuss all the information gathered.

Together, students will then work together to create a survival guide that incorporates the four different survival elements.  It will be each member’s job to write his or her own survival title and element pages.  The partner category pages will be created with the two students (i.e. Beasts & Chefs and Shoppers & Campers).  The group will have to decide who is in charge of creating the title, cover, dedication, introduction, and conclusion pages.

When completed, the guide will consist of the following:

( ) indicate number of pages

*Cover page (1)

*Title page (1)

*Dedication page (1)

*Introduction page (1)

*Element title pages (4) & Element discussion pages (2 per element)

*Partner Category pages (1 per pair)

*Conclusion page (1)
