Monarch Butterflies

1. Students will read about monarch butterflies in the classroom. Students will be doing a unit on life cycles of organisms. After completing the research in their book and the website they will conduct an investigation in which they will observe a monarch butterfly chrysalis and watch the caterpillar change into a butterfly and see several stages of its life cycle.

 

2. Go to the website provided and read about monarch butterflies. After reading the page provided you may scroll down and continue to the National Geographic Kids Monarch Butterfly site.

3. When finished reading in class and investigating the website students will raise monarch butterflies from a chrysalis. Students will observe butterflies daily and record data and changes in the observation.

 

Note: Students will be assessed by testing them on knowledge of monarch butterflies. What is a chrysalis and how is it formed?
