Session Descriptions

Session Title: From Zero to Handhelds

Presenter: Robert DeLilli & Lynn Lair

Session Description:
The goal of educating during the session is on multiple levels. I, being a Superintendent, will cover the aspect of implementation of handhelds to a group of teachers who for the most part were technophobic and how the process evolved to deploying Palms to two grade levels in the school. What worked, what did not and what could be done differently to enhance success.

Also, a teacher would present who is actively using handhelds to not only instruct her regular ed ELA class, but has found remedial-AIS- students respond very well and have shown gains in writing skills in a short time. The techniques she uses and the programs that work for her students will be demonstrated.

Session Title: Podcasting: What You Need to Get Started

Presenter: Karen Fasimpaur

Session Description:
What's all the buzz about podcasting, and how is it relevant to education? Come learn about these new technologies that offer a "low maintenance" way to publish information quickly. We'll spotlight applications for administrators, teachers, parents, and students and will show several free programs you can use to create your own audio and video podcasts with minimal effort and cost.

Session Title: Take the Pain Out of Writing with a Palm

Presenter: Cherie Skeeter

Presenter Resource

Session Description:
This session will present alternatives to the typical paper and pencil full-process writing through the use of various programs including IKWL, Plucker, Inspiration, and Word. Participants will see how using the Palm can spark interest and excitement for all levels of learners. Participants will join in a whole group writing activity that will demonstrate the process from beginning to end.

Session Title: Looking for a Bookie?

Presenter: Mike Curtis

Session Description:
eBooks for handhelds are popular, and this session will take it to the next level. How do you make your own? What are the essential plugins? What are the pros and cons between various eBook readers? What are your (preferably free) options when it comes to AudioBooks for my students? Session content will be focused on Pocket PC, with supporting materials available for Palm OS.

Session Title: A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

Presenter: Joanne Hoeffner

Session Description: Imagine a teaching tool that will enhance vocabulary development, provide for intense concept development and engage your students' creativity in K-12 classrooms. You get that and more with GoKnow's animation and drawing tool, Sketchy. You will have the opportunity to view student animations submitted to this year's Sketchy Contest and try your hand at using Sketchy as you participate in a model lesson designed to introduce GoKnow's animation tool to students and use it to illustrate simple as well as complex concepts. Bring your palm, your imagination and get started on the road to implementing research-based teaching strategies now.

Session Title: Tiny Spreadsheets = Great Learning Tools

Presenter: Tony Vincent

Session Description: Sheets To Go and Pocket Excel are great pieces of software that ship with virtually every Palm or Windows Mobile handheld. Spreadsheets can be powerful learning tools. Like their desktop companion, Excel, Sheets To Go and Pocket Excel can be used for making tables, storing data, and performing calculations. Learn about making your very own spreadsheets for geometry calculations, figuring your age and weight on other planets, practicing homophones, using self-checking worksheets, and more. You'll be amazed at what students in grades 4-12 can do with a tiny spreadsheet!

Session Title: Using a Handheld Computer to Monitor the Alignment of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment

Presenter: Roger Pancake

Session Description:
This presentation is primarily for administrators who want to use handheld computers to improve instruction. A brief overview of root causes related to student achievement will be presented. It will support the use of handheld computers for teacher communication from administrators regarding the alignment of curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The process of providing prompt, meaningful feedback from walkthroughs via both written and voice recording handheld computer generated emails will be demonstrated. Related implications for building instructional capacity will be discussed, if time permits.

Session Title: Integrated Curriculum for Handhelds: Video, Interactive Ebooks, and More!

Presenter: Karen Fasimpaur

Session Description:
Looking for something new in handheld use? Come see the state-of-the-art in integrated curriculum for handhelds. Integrated curriculum units are the key to get teachers using handhelds every day in a way that meaningfully affects student performance. We'll share examples of interactive multimedia content for math, writing, English as a Second Language, and more.

Session Title: Content Delivery & Student Assessment using Handheld Technology in the Classroom

Presenter: Mike Glumac

Session Description:
Need an assessment tool in the classroom? This seminar will illustrate how using Handheld Technology, bundled with Discourse Software from ETS can provide both delivery of content and real time assessment within the classroom. Have the advantage of getting 100% participation and unparalleled insight into each student’s comprehension and understanding of each lesson. Note: This is a vendor sponsored session.

Session Title: The Screen’s Too Small! (Or is it?) Surfing the Web on a Handheld

Presenter: Mike Curtis

Session Description:
Today more schools are going wireless with Wi-Fi becoming standard on mid-level handhelds.  Learn strategies that will drastically improve one’s efficiency and pleasure accessing on-line information with a handheld.  We’ll also look briefly at more sophisticated wireless use such as Flash and Java applets. Compare and contrast some of the benefits and limitations between handhelds and laptops or desktops. We’ll be focused on Pocket PCs for this session but virtually all of the content is transferable to Wi-Fi enabled Palms.

Session Title: So You've Got a New Handheld? Now What?

Presenter: Chris Cuppett - to order Chris' book call: 1-800-877-0858

The session will show how easily teachers can integrate technology into their instruction using the handhelds. Most of the programs shared in this session are freeware, so bring your handheld and be ready to load it up with ready to use programs.

Session Title: Podcasts & Handhelds in Classrooms

Presenter: Tony Vincent

Session Description: With the popularity of podcasting, you can find thousands of different audio programs for students. You don't need an iPod to listen to podcasts.  In fact, handhelds are in many ways better suited for activities that involve audio because students can listen while they interact with what they hear. Tony will share how to find great podcasts and learn about several activities that leverage the power of handhelds and the content of podcasts.

Session Title: Inspiration in the Reading Classroom

Presenter: Jason Miller

Presenter handout
