Description: While traveling, Tony Vincent makes use of his laptop, mobile phone, iPod, and handheld computer so that he stays productive, connected, and entertained. In fact, educators can learn much from Tony’s journey to MAHETC 2007. The communication, information, and technology that Tony relies on for his trip to Salisbury, Maryland can be leveraged in schools. Whether used for travel or for learning, today's technology tools open a world of possibilities to travelers and learners. Find out how and why!

#1 - Workshop Title:

Palm Seeks Desktop for Long-Term Relationship

Presenter: Mike Curtis

Session Description:
This hands-on session consists of two semi-advanced topics. We will spend the majority of our time working with Plucker—a free program that enables one to store Web sites and eBooks on the handheld for off-line use. Next we’ll get into some multi-media capability using The Core Pocket Media Player (TCPMP). TCPMP is a freeware program that lets one access images, .MP3 files, DivX movies, and more. Each of these programs requires the Palm to interact with the desktop or laptop computer, thereby unleashing the overall capabilities of the handheld.


#2 - Session Title: Radio for Kids, by Kids

Session Description:
The real power of podcasting comes from the creation of the audio programs that are posted online for a global audience. Learn about the making of two amazing podcasts: Radio WillowWeb and Our City. Gain valuable instructional strategies, recording tips, and useful techniques for creating podcasts with students.

 

#3 - Session Title: It's a Small World After All

Session Description:
What can happen when you put Dell Axim computers in the hands of first grade students? Some big time learning that's for sure! This session will focus on how handheld computers can become an integral part of the first grade curriculum. See how first grade teachers at Brandywine Springs Elementary School meaningfully infused technology into various aspects of their curriculum. From having their students record reading passages to improve fluency to having their students create data tables and create graphs to represent the data, it was clear that these students had worked to meet the challenge. Come and see how this team of talented first grade teachers continues to find ways to infuse and integrate 1:1 computing in their classroom. The results will astound you!

Mobile videos or “mini-movies” are an effective tool for differentiating instruction and improving student achievement. They engage students and provide both remediation and enrichment opportunities. Come see how you can tap into video resources you already have and use them on mobile devices to support a variety of curriculum areas and grade levels. We’ll also look at how to create your own mini-movies using free software.

Every Windows computer comes pre-installed with a great resources for making digital movies: MovieMaker. Now's your chance to gain some hands-on experience of creating your very own movie that can be shown on and computer and/or posted to your webpage. Come and see the many new programs that I'm using with students. Math applications that deal with elapsed time, rounding, regrouping, and more. I'll share Social Studies applications for map skills. There are also new applications for Reading, Science and other areas as well. If you have your own Palm, please bring it along. All these applications can be beamed or copied right to your handheld during or after the session.

What's all the buzz about podcasting, and how is it relevant to education? This technology offers as a low maintenance way to publish information quickly. Today more schools are going wireless with Wi-Fi becoming standard on mid-level handhelds.  Learn strategies that will drastically improve one’s efficiency and pleasure accessing on-line information with a handheld or Smartphone.  Compare and contrast some of the benefits and limitations between handhelds and laptops or desktops. We’ll be focused on Pocket PCs for this session but virtually all of the content is transferable to Wi-Fi enabled Palms.


#14 - Session Title: The Future of the Internet: Web 2.0

Session Description:
The Internet as evolved into a working beast that has grown because of its' users. Web 2.0 applications have created a new generation of sites that thrive on interactivity, data, and multi-functionality. This session will highlight the genesis of Web 2.0, define what makes a site Web 2.0 and showcase a multitude of sample Web 2.0 sites. Come along for the ride, you don't want to miss Web 2.0!

This session will introduce teachers to Google Earth 4.0.  This free software download can enhance your science, social studies and current events lessons in a dynamic way using the projection systems in the classrooms. 


#16 - Workshop Title: What It’s All About: Blogs & RSS

Session Description:
Blogs are easy-to-update websites. Gone are the days of complicated HTML editors and uploading. Teachers and students are keeping blogs for posting assignments, reflecting on lessons, and connecting with one another. Blogs use the magic of Really Simple Syndication to make their content available in a variety of forms and websites. Learn how real educators and students use blogs and RSS for learning!


#17 - Session Title: Vocabulary - What can the PALM do for you?

Session Description:
We will explore different types of programs that can help students build their vocabulary word use for writing or for basic vocabulary knowledge. I will give practical ways to implement these into your classroom the very next day. If you have your own PALM, bring it. You can start your own vocabulary log. You can make this as easy or as complicated as you wish to for the level of your students.

Many educators - even those who are tech-savvy tend to limit the iPod's use in the classroom. While podcasting is a great way to captivate student interest, iPods are capable of so much more! This session will focus on the emergence of the iPod as an educational tool, its possibilities for classroom use, and ideas on how to implement an iPod in your classroom.


#20 - Session Title: How big is your Ecological Footprint?

We all leave a ‘footprint’ on the environment because of our lifestyle. But just how much land is required to support the way you live? What is the size of your footprint compared to the rest of the world? Are there enough available resources to support everyone if everyone lived like you do? We'll focus on the applications of these technologies to you as a professional, but will also touch on the classroom applications. #21 - Workshop Title:

Who wants to be an Astronaut?

Presenter: JoAnne Hoeffner

Session Description:
Imagine yourself on the International Space Station 240 miles above the surface of the Earth. You look through a porthole and see the Earth spread out below you. You pick up your camera and take a picture of this incredible sight. Well - you can pay $20 million to a company called 'Space Adventures' to do this, or you can enroll in NASA's EarthKAM project for free, and although you will not be physically on the ISS, you and your students WILL actually take and retrieve images taken by a camera mounted on the International Space Station.

Middle and High school teachers, spend this session learning how to enroll in EarthKAM, how to locate image opportunities, how to request and retrieve images and what to do with the images once you have them. I believe EarthKAM is the greatest online learning opportunity for students I have ever found!

There are tens of thousands of applications for Palm and Pocket PC handhelds. many of these applications are quite appropriate for teachers and students and many of them are absolutely free! Tony Vincent demonstrates software and classroom activities that teachers and students are using for learning. Examples include completing crazy word stories, conducting surveys, simulating pond life and mathematical games.

#36 - Workshop Title (2 hours): Strategies for Rolling out a Windows Mobile Implementation

It all starts with effective Professional Development. You need an effective plan that makes the most of your precious, limited time. While there are numerous resources describing strategies when using Palms in education, many educators state there is less available for Windows Mobile. Meanwhile, many schools are now going the Windows Mobile route. In this session, Mike Curtis will lay out proven plans for getting educators up to speed on what one really needs to know about the Windows Mobile handheld and how to best start the integration process. We’ll also take a very brief look at some of the best freeware available that helps round out the software that comes pre-installed on the device.

Frustrated with the lack of time or materials to set up and run science labs? Appalled by the fact that your students complete a lab but seemingly have learned nothing from it. Looking for another way to increase true understanding of basic science principles? Internet based virtual labs are a great way to introduce, reinforce or review specific scientific concepts. There are many virtual labs online now and the number is growing. Let me show you my favorites in physical science, earth science and life science. Most of the labs are geared for middle school students but some sites have labs for elementary or high school students as well.
