1.  Miyax has run away from her home. She is a child divorcee.

2.  Miyax intended destination is point hope. She hopes to meet the ship the North Star there, and to work her way on board the ship and travel to San Francisco, California, where her pen pal, Amy, lives.

3.  Miyax is lost because she has no North Star in the sky to guide.

4. Miyax’s father, an Eskimo hunter has told Miyax that he once told a wolf leader of his need for food. The wolf had provided for him.

5.Miyax names the adult wolves Amoroq, Silver, Nails, and Jello. The pups named Kapu, Sister, Zing, Zat, and Zit.

6. Miyax  knows  that  if  she  is  accepted  by  the  leader  of  the  wolf  pack,  she  will  be  accepted  by  all  of  the  wolves. Pg 18

7.     The  wolf  arches  his  neck,  narrow  his  eye,  presses  his  ears forward,  and  seems  to  snarl. Pg 5-7

8.     Miyax pats Amaroq under his chin. Pg 26

9.     Walking  on  two  legs  is  the  signal of “man”  to  the  wild  animals  of  the Artic. Pg 29

10.  The secret of  the fat  pups  is  that  they  are  being  weaned  and  are being  fed  partially  digested  food  by  the  adult  wolves.  Pg 36

   11. The two forge a friendship based on being “joking-serious” partners. (pg.34)

   12. Kapu nuzzles Jello mouth, causing Jello to regurgitate food, which he places    on the ground for Kapu. Kapu leaves the meat for Miyax.

   13. At first, she cannot go off to get caribou  droppings, so she uses grass and lichens for the fuel.

   14.Miyax notices that the cotton grasses by the pond are seeding out into white puffs. This marks the coming of autumn to Miyax.

   15. The viscera is considered to be the “nuts and candy” of the Artic kill.

   16. Amaroq takes Miyax into the wolf den to sleep with the pack.

   17. Miyax digs a deep cellar in the permafrost and uses sod as a cover for it.

   18. Miyax shares some of the cooked meat with Kapu.  To cement their friendship.

   19. Miyax taps the top of Jello’s nose with her man’s Knife.

   20. Miyax notices: Amaroq forces Jello to surrender, Silver makes Jello go back to sit with pups and Kapu ignores Jello’s calls to come to the den.
